Bailando

Luly is a 24 year old dancer from the village of Poncitlan in Mexico, a place where there are more cows than inhabitants. She moved to Hamburg 4 years ago to study and to take her career as a dancer to a level she couldn't reach in Mexico. Through her father, who is a bodybuilder among other things, she came into contact with gymnastics and thus at some point with contemporary dance. Luly and I meet at a demonstration against feminicide in Hamburg. She tells me how dangerous it is to live as a woman in Mexico, where on average more than 10 women and girls are killed every day. She tells me how much anger and fear play a role in daily life at our next meeting at her home, in a shared flat with two other Mexican flatmates. Together they try to maintain Mexican rituals here in Germany. Due to the shift to the right in the German political landscape, Luly has had problems getting her freelancer visa extended. Luly had to call in a lawyer to appeal against her deportation. A decision is still pending.
