Jonas Utikal is 23 years old and is training as a garden and landscaper at Loki Schmidt Garten in Hamburg. The tasks he is learning at include the construction, redesign and maintenance of green and open spaces as well as landscape conservation. For a long time, Jonas didn't know what to do with himself professionally and struggled with severe depression. Through an internship in a similar field, he learned to appreciate the profession of landscape gardener.

Nevertheless, it took another six months and around 100 phone calls before he got the apprenticeship. Now he is proud to be the only GaLa Bau apprentice at Loki Schmidt Garten. Working in the fresh air is important to him. He needs the structure and the physical effort, he says. At the beginning of 2025, I accompanied Jonas for a day on his current construction site where he was working with his master craftsman to completely rebuild and renovate the old pharmacy garden of the Loki Schmidt Garten. They will be working on this project for a total of 5 whole months.
